Rindu Lagu Melayu

M Nasir and Jamal Abdillah, Ghazal Untuk Rabiah.

Ever since October came and I started my final year, I've been trawling on Youtube waaay more than I should and most of the times, what I listen/watch is the same stuff. Old stuff. Really old stuff.

I'm talking M Nasir, Too Phat/Malique, Siti Nurhaliza, etc. Today I went past Disagree's playlist. See how bad it's been.

Honestly, I stopped listening to Malaysian songs the moment I stepped into MSU for that prep course. Most of the times, the lyrics are too cheesy for me. Plus I was too head over heels for Thai pop, and then J- and later K-pop; and so cheesy cringe-inducing Malay music didn't have space in my playlist. I don't understand Korean or Japanese or even Thai so I don't need to suffer through words and lyrics that makes me want to bash my head to the walls. How can I listen to something that makes me embarrassed?

Then came along Shweta asking me to do a list on Asian Indie music that I've listened and loved in 2013 (which is ending in 9 days LE GASP) and I felt so embarrassed to realize that I have not a single song from my homeland that I can brag about.

To be honest, the only Indie Malaysian singer that I've ever given the time of the day to is Yuna. Deeper Conversation up there made me like her, and I went on a total Yuna rampage. Because I'm cheap and I have no idea what and where to look for her material, I ended up ripping most of her songs and covers and demos off Youtube and I still do listen to them occasionally.

Last week because of Shweta, I went Googling her updates and it turns out she came out with a new album just weeks ago. I listened to them, and lord, I loved it.

At the moment, Lights and Camera is my constant favourite. Feeling like buying the CD because I'm a physical album kind of person, but I have no idea where to find it. And somehow I came across Aizat because of their duet project, and now I'm on Itunes listening to his works' previews.

I STILL PREFER PHYSICAL ALBUMS.

Sigh. This post has no motive, tbh.

Anybody wants to recommend Malaysian songs to me? And please, if anyone recs that blasphemous Macam Rihanna or something song, I will hunt and kill you in my dreams tonight. That song makes me homicidal and I'm not even kidding.

By the way, is there anyone left singing Tradisional Malay songs? Like what Siti and Nuraniza did back when I was like, 10 or something? It sucks to realize and remember that you're listening to a song that's practically 20 years old just because the newer stuff is not your genre.
